Mobile hospital in place of our canteen
On the third Wednesday of November, our canteen on the Priemyselná street turned to a donor room. Dining tables along the windows were exchanged for portable folding beds. The other half of the canteen changed into a consulting room and a laboratory, which were managed by the team of doctors and nurses from the National Blood Transfusion Service (Národná transfúzna služba). Our colleagues from the IT department showed us once again that they are real gentlemen and carried everything needed for the donation from the ambulance car to the canteen.
Testing marathon
By 8 a.m., the first brave blood donors started to come in our canteen. Step by step, all of them went through different medics` posts and the medical staff evaluated — based on filled donor’s questionnaire, expert talks, results of blood pressure and blood tests — whether the potential donor can give blood. You can’t if you have been treated by dentist during the last 72 hours or if you have a fever over 38 °C, herpes or a tick.
11 litres of the S&B blood group
Even though all of our employees wanted to donate blood, only 24 donors, along with some first-time donors, could get to the donation. 13 men and 11 women together gave 11 litres of the life-giving liquid which is still an article in short supply in our hospitals. We give one big THANKS to all of the successful and also unsuccessful donors for their effort to save other people`s lives by giving a part of themselves. Even the team of medics from National Blood Transfusion Service praised our employees for their bravery. They were pleasantly surprised that so many suitable donors were found in our company, and they would like to visit us again. So, what do you think, employees of S&B? When can you donate blood?
Blood donors must be over 18 but less than 60 years old. Men can donate blood every 3 months, women every 4 months after their last blood draw. Another requirement is that you have to weigh over 50 kg, you mustn`t be an HIV carrier, you haven‘t overcome Hepatitis type B or C. You don’t have any serious illness, you don’t use drugs nor steroids. More information about blood donation can be found on this website: www.ntssr.sk.
