Sometimes little is enough to help achieving a big action. This is the case of the Missing Maps Mapathlon workshop, which took place at one of the branches of Scheidt & Bachmnann Slovensko.

On Wednesday, 12th February 2020, the Slovak branch of FCS based in the Living Center in Žilina lent its meeting room for Missing Maps Mapathlon. The workshop was aimed to help the humanitarian organization Doctors without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) with vectorisation of satellite images of uncharted geographical areas. Thank to them medical and logistics teams can work faster, more efficiently and specifically in a variety of emergencies.

The Mapathlon is open for everyone. You just need to have the time, desire and your own laptop. Our company took care of the premises and snacks for this event. There were 14 participants – students, volunteers and for the first time there were the representatives of the Slovak Red Cross. Beginners vectorised in the OpenStreetMap environment, more experienced vectorised two African regions in JOSM application: the surroundings of town Mbunia in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Sila region in Chad.

This workshop was the 31st mapping marathon organized by AMAVET Club no. 962, and at the same time the 8th Mapathlon in Žilina realized in cooperation with the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics of the University of Žilina. I am glad that already the second IT firm in Žilina hosted this event. I believe that we will also be able to establish regular cooperation with the Slovak Red Cross,” said Milo Ofúkaný from AMAVET. We are glad that we could become a partner of an interesting and helpful event.
